By the end of 2023, Romania’s IT workforce reached 147,200, up 5.1% from the previous year. This growth rate has slowed significantly from previous years, which saw double-digit increases.

The global IT market slowdown is impacting Romania, influenced by trends in the US where tech companies are experiencing significant layoffs. Despite some companies like Nvidia thriving, the US tech sector continues to cut jobs, a trend now seen in Romania as well.

Romania’s IT sector has benefited from substantial foreign investment and offers high salaries, more than double the national average. However, the proportion of IT professionals remains below the EU average, and recent employment growth has slowed.

Looking ahead, IT employment growth in Romania is expected to stagnate or slightly decline in 2024. The sector is shifting from outsourced projects to developing its own innovations, which could drive future progress despite current layoffs.
